For over 35 years Loaves and Fishes Soup Kitchen has been serving meals for the hungry and homeless. They serves approximately 4,600 meals to the homeless each month. In addition to these meals lunch and dinner are served to their emergency shelter families seven days a week. Much of the food that is served is donated from the community - from local stores, bakeries, produce companies, food suppliers and others. Because of these gracious donations, Loaves and Fishes is able to provide healthy and nutritious meals to those in need.
Volunteers are an integral part of this program. Local churches and non-profit organizations take turns organizing workers. September 8th was First Methodist Church and Pensacola Rotary North’s turn to help.
Setting the tables, pouring ice water, (always welcome on these ultra hot days), providing milk for children, and placing food on plates to be served to each person and cleaning up dishes and trash are all parts of the day’s work.
Dave and Vonnie Reed of Dave Reed Insurance were among the Pensacola Rotary North members, who worked as a volunteers to make Sunday night’s dinner service a success. The group fed over 130 people. Among those 15 were children and 18 were senior citizens. The Loaves and Fishes had more than 30 family members staying at their shelter. Everyone enjoyed a hearty meal of meatloaf, green beans and corn bread.
